at Rucker Elementary School, forgetting that his seven month-old granddaughter in the backseat of the car needed to be dropped off at daycare. By the time he returned to his car for his lunch break, he found the child unresponsive, still covered with a blanket he’d placed over her in the morning to shield her from the chilly morning air. The baby girl was later pronounced dead at Memorial Hermann Southeast. It was only 83 degrees outside.

In an examination of the media reports covering the hot car deaths in his dataset, Null found that the vast majority of hot car deaths were accidents – over 50% of the deaths occurred when the child was forgotten in the car by a caregiver, and 25% when a child gained access to the vehicle on their own.
