As drought lingers, Kerrville rethinking its water use policies

As drought continues and summer approaches, Kerrville says it has reduced the amount of water it is pumping from its water sources and is asking its residents to cut down their water usage. On May 27, the Hill Country city reduced the operating capacity of its water system from 6 million gallons a day to 4.5 million gallons a day. Kerrville has about 25,000 residents.

Housing, water, history: Familiar priorities for Kerrville's new mayor Stuart Barron, Kerrville's executive director of public works and engineering, said the cutback in water capacity is due in part to reduced flow in the Guadalupe River, which feeds into Nimitz Lake, a water supply reservoir. The Guadalupe River's flow is significantly down from its 20-year-mean average. The changes are precautionary at this point, and the city isn't on the brink of drying up, Barron said.

State lawmakers wade into Kendall County energy storage fight 'That water that runs down the river, that's pretty much gone from us,' Barron said. 'It's the slower rain that really recharges the springs on the river will give us long relief from the drought.' Conservation is the best way for Kerrville residents to ease the water supply strain, Barron said.
