“The inner dialogue and the subtitles that appear on the photos are mostly from the anxious attached partner’s point of view,” says Bahbah. “In some cases you'll observe that the avoidant responds, but it's mostly Boe’s character speaking.” The dialogue, however, is intended to be subjective; “people can read it based on their own experiences,” she says.
The precariousness of intimacy has always been the focus of Bahbah’s work. In the short film she directed for Kygo and Tina Turner’s cover ofplay a couple who appear to have a strong and playful relationship, while in reality, they lack a deep emotional connection. While she was in college, Bahbah attended a blues music festival with an old crush, and gravitated toward private scenes between individuals who attended the shows.
The relatability of Bahbah’s work is also connected to her decision to release her photo series exclusively on Instagram—and to sell her images there as well. “I create art to tell a story and not just to make money,” she says. “If so many people connect with my art, why should I make it only available to a small percentage of people?” Last year, she gave buyers the choice to pay whatever they could afford for her prints, rather than setting a price.
Bahbah is currently working on a coffee table book and also making plans to move to film and TV soon. “I often consider turning my series into movies,” she says. “I experience life and process new things every day, and I still have so much of my story to tell.”Sign Up Now
