San Gabriel Valley artist Jonathan Chang hopes that, through his art, he can raise awareness of who the victims were, their names and stories.

For Jonathan Chang, art is a medium for healing and starting conversations as a form of activism.tragic mass shooting that killed 11 Asians at a Monterey Park dance hall“You always hear about violence toward Asians, and other races,” said Chang, 36, who works full-time as an art director. “I never thought this would happen in our community, the San Gabriel Valley. It was always a sacred place for Asians to be together.

San Gabriel Valley artist and illustrator Jonathan Chang’s portraits of the victims are getting a huge following on social media. He says he is doing this voluntarily to raise awareness to the victims’ stories and wants to draw more attention to their lives from all the political debate that inevitably happens after incidents of gun violence and mass shootings.
