Arlington nuns refused to allow a representative of the Vatican from entering the monastery.

Bishop Michael Olson delivers his homily during mass. The Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth started in-person mass this weekend while enforcing social distancing requirements during the service.this week, the Vatican said that while it upheld Olson’s decision to investigate the nun, it did not find enough evidence to dismiss her. The Vatican said Gerlach did not use “force or violence,” nor did she have authority over the North Carolina priest, Philip Johnson.

Twice this week, on Wednesday and Thursday, the nuns refused to allow a representative appointed by the Vatican from entering their monastery, the nuns wrote on their website. The nuns have demanded an apology from Olson.“We are not ‘things’ to be traded or given away in back-room deals, but women vowed to the exclusive love and service of Almighty God,” the nuns wrote April 20.

In a statement posted on the diocese’s website, Mother Marie of the Incarnation, president of the Carmelite nuns association, confirmed she was turned away from the monastery. A diocese spokesman said Friday that a priest accompanying her to celebrate Mass in Latin was also barred from entering. The nuns last month sought a temporary restraining order against Olson and a slew of Catholic leaders, but the diocese argued civil court has no jurisdiction in church matters.

Gerlach admitted to breaking her vow of chastity on two occasions, but at another point in the conversation, she said she only spoke to the priest by phone.Gerlach had been hospitalized in November 2022 for seizures and was taking pain medication as a result, Bobo said at the time. Gerlach, who is in poor health, uses a wheelchair and feeding tube. Before last year, the nuns had little interaction with the Fort Worth diocese.

They live and work on 72 wooded acres in Arlington, spending their days praying, cooking, cleaning and caring for the grounds. Although the number fluctuates, nine nuns live and work there now: the reverend mother, six sisters and two nuns in training., Staff writer. Sarah Bahari is a trending news reporter.
