Dr. Seth Laster with the Laster Eye Center shows what a sun-damaged eye looks like.

Dr. Seth Laster, with the Laster Eye Center in Fort Smith, Arkansas , says even a few seconds of staring at the sun can cause lifetime damage.“It won't cause like a sunburn on the eyes, but it will cause damage to the retina,” said Laster. He says the longer you stare, the more damage can occur. “It can burn a hole into the back part of your eye culture, retina,' said Laster. 'Which can cause a little black spot in your vision.

'It will have on there the requirements of the ISO will have a 12312-2 on it,' he said. 'That means that it is certified to view for the eclipse ... you'll look down and put them on and then look up at the sun, at the eclipse, and then you'll look back down and then take them off to make sure you're not looking at the sun.”If these precautions aren't taken, the damage that could be done is irreversible.
