by Matthew Jacobson, KUTV Arizona Coyotes fans celebrate an empty-net goal by Sean Durzi against the Edmonton Oilers during the third period of an NHL hockey game Wednesday, April 17, 2024, in Tempe, Ariz. The Coyotes won 5-2. Following the news that Utah would be getting its own NHL franchise, Arizona Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman will are slated to speak about the outside-the-box deal.
The announcement came Thursday after weeks of speculation that the Arizona Coyotes would be transferred to Salt Lake City. Even though it's hockey, the league threw a curveball: The Coyotes would be staying in Arizona, in name, at least, while Meruelo gets a new arena for the team funded, constructed, and ready for play by 2029.
The Coyotes have been playing at Arizona State University after the city of Glendale, Arizona, chose not to renew its contract with the team in 2021. In the meantime, all the Coyotes' assets would shift to Utah, where they will populate the as-yet-unnamed, brand-new franchise. Bettman and Meruelo will be speaking from Phoenix. 2News will stream the press conference here, on Facebook and on YouTube Live at 12:30 p.m., Mountain Time.
