After bowing to Russian pressure and yanking an app designed to coordinate opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Apple and Google face new concern over their commitment to human rights and democratic norms.

from their local app stores, it raised worries that two of the world’s most successful companies are more comfortable bowing to undemocratic edicts — and maintaining a steady flow of profits — than upholding the rights of their users.

“Now this is the poster child for political oppression,” said Sascha Meinrath, a Penn State University professor who studies online censorship issues. Google and Apple “have bolstered the probability of this happening again.” Google’s own employees have reportedly blasted the company’s cave-in to Putin’s power play by posting internal messages and images deriding the app’s removal.

Russia, meanwhile, added to the existing “labyrinth of regulations that international tech companies must navigate in the country,” according to Freedom House. Overall online freedom in the U.S. also declined for the fifth consecutive year; the group said, citing conspiracy theories and misinformation about the 2020 elections as well as surveillance, harassment and arrests in response to racial-injustice protests.

Navalny’s ally Ivan Zhdanov said on Twitter that the politician’s team is considering suing the two companies. He also mocked the move: “Expectations: the government turns off the internet. Reality: the internet, in fear, turns itself off.”

The hypocrisy of AP and mainstream media. 'DON'T do unto others what you don't want to do unto you' Golden rule.

Apple and Google are conducting business in Russia. Russia not Apple or Google determine the terms of their business arrangements in Russia. They are free to leave at anytime. In the U.S., you have become accustomed to Corporations calling the shots. We have a passive Government.

Apple. Is. A. Business… It’s not the arbitrator of human rights or democratic norms.

Capitalism above everything else!

They sold out when they went to China. Commerce over morality!

Those companies are controlling the elections all around the world. It is no use to vote anymore, we should save money and just let them choose the governments worldwide.

Good one Apple Google 👎

Remember Gab and Parler? You helped set the precedent. We all know your real complaint isn't that they banned an app but that it wasn't your decision.

Courage of their convictions? Couldn't get convicted of courage.

Yanking opposition from platforms, or just yanking the platforms.. also done in the USA

So democracy and human rights is about 'coordinating opposition'?

Really, that Apple and Google agreed to do that? Hard to believe. 🤔🤔🤔

So it takes fucking w/ Putin’s opposition to finally get some accountability for these tyrant companies? MSM accounts are so predictable? Will AP speak about me losing my IG account for sharing the Hunger Biden laptop that is now proven true? Of course not I’m white & not liberal

So respecting Russian law and removing an app made to screw their elections must be a concern for 'human rights and democratic norms' [sic]: what a farce.

how would this read different if a Russian company put out an app telling people in other countries who to vote for

American corporations are not supposed to be transnational power brokers. The small extent to which they have to defer to national laws and principles is a good thing, not a bad thing...

How much were they paid? 🤔

This is what they do

LOL

Putin and his Russian oligarchs move comfortably among the global elites, including the big tech giants. Software developers, programmers, and engineers need to protect fellow citizens. Be the check on the power of governments, and corporations. e pluribus unum Liberty

If they can make a nice big juicy profit.. these two tech syndicates will easily deal with a Russian dictatorship.

American corporations have held insider knowledge about Pegasus NSO and Francisco Partners private equity ownership and development of spyware technology in San Francisco, CA. The news speaks of Israel a lot, but not enough of the backstory. When BigTech self-governs they spy. 🤫

What commitment to human rights? There is none, they worship at the altar of the almighty dollar.

Apparently, there’s more money to be made by working with the government & not the people.

or lack thereof

‘The Take’: Emmys Overlook Diversity; Netflix and Apple Dominate for StreamersThe Emmy Awards may have had a record number of diverse nominees, but that’s where the buck stopped when it came to voting for them. No people of color won any of the major acting categories,… Giving the awards just because of diversity is the shittiest thing ever... They didn't 'overlook' diversity. A shit load of diverse people were nominated...they just weren't the better actors. And they didn't have the better shows. 🤷🏼‍♂️
