SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary As part of Hulu's "Huluween" event, the new horror-comedy, Appendage, is available to watch on the streaming service. The movie follows a young woman named Hannah who struggles to maintain a healthy level of confidence in multiple aspects of her life. Once an abhorrent appendage grows from her body and reinforces her insecurities, Hannah pushes away the only people who may be able to save her.
When Anna said, "Hey, I have this weird short for a segment of Huluween, do you want to come on it?" it was sort of a no-brainer. So I hop on the short, and then day two of the short, the head of the studio came in said, "Hey, we want this to be a feature. How do you guys feel about that?" which is a crazy experience on a short film. It was an unexpected way for the second day to go. It very serendipitously just all happened.
Creatively, as far as the look and the feeling of it, the short was a lot campier. The short had a very, very retro silly vibe to it. That was reflected in the look. It was a crazier pushed grade. Everything felt very enhanced. It's supposed to be a horror-comedy, but it also does deal with heavier topics, and Hannah's backstory is very sad. The look of the film had to mature a little bit.
You get the sense that, right now, we're supposed to feel that she is not great. Even when the violence and everything gets heightened and ridiculous, you still had a grounded sense in the beginning that things f*cking sucked for Mia. We wanted that same sort of through-line. When Hannah is feeling her worst, and we're in her head, you'll see the image tends to skew a little more gold or orange. Then, when the appendage is taking over, things skew a little bit more green.
We worked out this process with our colorist. Again, it was such a fine tightrope kind of balance to not make it look too serious or sad. The beginning of the film plays into the color of the lighting more and feels a little more saturated. As she gets more and more f---ed up, we pull more and more color out.
That's where things got really gnarly for us. Everyone on the ground. Hannah isn't running, so I can't be chasing her. She is sitting on the floor, and we don't have the room in there to fit a dolly or a crane to get that low on her. I actually bought an auto mechanic dolly going into this one. It sits on the ground, and it's super low profile. There exists a video of me sitting on my heels and dragging myself towards Hannah, so I can chase her on the floor.
