Supporters of Han Kuo-yu, Taiwan's 2020 presidential election candidate of the KMT or Nationalist Party, pass under a giant Taiwanese flag during a campaign rally in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung city on Friday, Jan 10, 2020. Taiwan will hold its presidential election on Jan. 11, 2020.
TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwanese are casting their votes Saturday for the president and legislature of a self-governing island that acts like a sovereign nation yet is not recognized by the U.N. or any major country. China regards Taiwan, which lies 160 kilometers off its east coast, as a renegade province. Taiwanese are increasingly asserting an independent identity despite the population’s mostly Chinese roots.
The election pits President Tsai Ing-wen of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party against challenger Han Kuo-yu, a populist mayor from the China-friendly Nationalist Party. A third-party candidate, James Soong, is also running.Taiwan, whose more than 23 million people are squeezed onto a mostly mountainous island roughly the size of Maryland, has only 15 diplomatic allies, all smaller nations.
despite Chinese roots From 1600s?! Taiwanese is a spoken language different than Mandarin & taught to children usually by their grandparents Independent for centuries Also 16 Indigenous populations live there mainly on the east coast that were never Chinese Congrats Tsai Ing-wen
Anyone remember when 13 colonies acted like a sovereign nation, not giving a damn what England (now leader of said UN) thought about it? China, might wanna take some notes, and just leave them be.
I thought the US recognized Taiwan?
Good luck
It “is”; it doesn’t “act”.
🇹🇼 The little island of Taiwan has always had a history of being out of step with the mainland. The fact that the ROC managed to escape there continues that tradition. It is hard, as a human being, to overlook its determined spirit and dogged determination.
U.S.

🇹🇼
