The number of deals raised by City-based companies fell significantly in the first quarter

San Francisco startups weren’t immune to the tough times faced by their brethren across the nation in the first quarter.

San Francisco companies raised $7.4 billion in venture funding in the just-completed first quarter, according to the NVCA and PitchBook. That tally was up 13.8% from the amount city startups raised in the fourth quarter. By contrast, the amount of funding raised by startups across the country fell 9% over the same period.

San Francisco startups closed 270 venture deals in the first quarter, down 9% from the fourth quarter and 30% from the first quarter of last year. Nationwide, the number of venture deals fell nearly 17% from the fourth quarter to the first and 28% year over year.
