Anthony Barr's decision to spurn the Jets at the last minute and stay with the Vikings may wind up being the best signing the Jets never made

New Jets coach Adam Gase was watching from the sidelines when Anthony Barr sacked Miami QB Ryan Tannehill twice last December. Barr apparently reneged on a free-agent deal with the Jets and will stick with the Vikings. Being left at the altar is no fun, even if you’re an NFL team. But instead of being upset that free agent linebacker Anthony Barr, the Jets should count their proverbial blessings.

The Jets' plan, apparently, was to convert Barr to a 3-4 outside linebacker. Despite new coordinator Gregg Williams having used the 4-3 for most of his NFL career, the Jets have decided to stick with the 3-4. They have used the 3-4 as their base defense ever since 2006 when then-Bill Belichick disciple Eric Mangini installed the defense to replace the 4-3 “Tampa 2” style defense preferred by predecessor Herm Edwards.

Barr had only three sacks last season, two of which came against Miami. Hmmm. Wonder if new coach Adam Gase was a little bit influenced by that and recommended him to Williams and general manager Mike Maccagnan?reportedly had agreed to terms on a contract with the Jets that would’ve paid him $15 million per year

The Jets were wise not to get into a bidding war with Detroit for the services of ex-New England edge rusher Trey Flowers,. Flowers blossomed last season just in time in his walk year, posting a career-high 7.5 sacks.
