Annual report for avalanches in 2023-24 ski season released

Don’t miss our weekly town hall.The remnants of a deadly avalanche on Thursday, May 9, 2024, is seen on the Big Willow Aprons slope of Lone Peak near Draper, Utah. Two skiers killed in the slide were recovered Friday after weather and terrain issues stopped efforts the previous day.

The report showed that there were 902 avalanches reported over the 150-day season. Remember, these are only the avalanches reported — there were likely many more., which officials said were "late-season" on May 9. The two deaths were the first and only of the season, officials said."The public submitted a generous amount of field observations that assisted forecasters and the rest of the backcountry community," the report read.

With 131% of the average snowfall, Utah set a record for the snowiest two-year period in the state's history from October 2022 to May 2024, the report said.
