Australia said on Thursday it was suspending its extradition treaty with Hong Kong in response to a new security law imposed there and announced measures to attract businesses from the Asian financial hub, provoking an angry response from Beijing.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the law introduced last week in Hong Kong was a fundamental change of circumstances and Australia would suspend the extradition agreement.

Future student visas would also be offered for five years, however Morrison said they were “not expecting large numbers of applicants any time soon”. “There is so much talent in Hong Kong,” said Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge. “There are great businesses in Hong Kong. And we know that many individuals now might be looking elsewhere, because they do want to be in a freer country, they want to be in a democratic country.”

“If there are businesses that wish to relocate to Australia, creating jobs, bringing investment, creating opportunities for Australia then we will be very proactive in seeking to encourage that,” said Morrison. But, he said some graduates were worried they weren’t covered, as many had returned to Hong Kong and were on bridging visas, unable to return to Australia because of COVID-19.

Australia changed its travel advisory for Hong Kong, where around 100,000 Australians live and work, to say “reconsider your need to remain in Hong Kong” if they are concerned about the new law.

HK is no longer an Asian financial hub under the shadow of the NationalSecurityLaw. The law destroyed the judicial independence, rule of law in Hong Kong and also fair trial. HK becomes another Chinese city.

A sensible decision, given that CCP is now directly imposing its law to Hong Kong, the judicial system in HK has lost its independence & impartiality. No fair sentences are expected. Hence honoring the extradition treaty does more harm than good. StandWithHongKong Chinazi

viriyabot Proud to be an Australian. Australians stand with freedom, human rights, democracy and the rule of law around the globe. We welcome freedom loving people to come and stay. But if you are communism supporters, stay away!

Well done Australia!

Very strong, robust & responsible move from Australia.

Es la interferencia en asuntos políticos de un país soberano.

Looks like everyone just opening land for China, not doing anything to stop that. That's a shame

Stupid Australia

This will backfire.

Thank you for taking in these kids. Hong Kong doesn't need garbage!

Australia feels pretty strong! Why is that? Do you have, as vasals, US and GB support?

Of Hong Kong's 7.5mio, how many support the protesters?

For what reason? Wht this new law has to do with Australia? Anybody can tell...

hkstream The condition in HK is deteriorating drastically after the promulgation of National Security Law. We hope the international society could stand with us for the protest against CCP’s dictatorship.

Well done, Aussies.

Good onya, Oz. All the western democracies should do the same. XiJinping and the CCP brought the world's scorn entirely on themselves. All they have to do is play by the rules of trade and diplomacy that made the world richer and safer since WWII. They deserve to be isolated.

The world ought to unite to protect Hong Kong against 🇨🇳.

Racists

zebodag Good. Don't need more chinks. Thank you PRC.

A small and brave step ....a giant leap for mankind !

Nauru and Christmas Island. Australia doesn't give a crud about human rights. They are merely following orders from the US, to damage relations with their biggest customers. Very self defeating, but oh well.

I applaude you Australia! Wish my country in Europe would be more like you, not constantly selling our principles for money

Essential that people who flee Hong Kong are genuine dissidents. The CCP could infiltrate into this migration many undesirables. Hawke opened the door and gave thousands citizenry after the Tiananmen massacre which was a farce.Australians of Chinese origin should be loyal to us🇦🇺

Cool! 很好啊!傻B们继续。

Sympathy for Australian taxpayers

It's a strive story: a coal digger will become a financial planner.

A cash grab by Scott? Makes sense. Don’t fall for the whole white saviour act. There are refugees incarcerated for 7+ years all over Australia, Nauru and Christmas Island. They’ll never get to live here free. Our govt don’t give a shit about human rights.
