The death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of five Memphis police officers has rekindled fear and difficult conversations across the Black community with the fresh sting that the life of another young Black man was claimed by police brutality.
The five officers were immediately fired and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Nichols’ beating during a Jan. 7 traffic stop. Nichols, 29, died three days later. For Winnie Okella, an anti-police brutality activist in Harrisburg, the fact Black officers were involved evokes the deeply unsettling period in American history when enslaved Black men were deputized by white slave owners with law enforcement capabilities.
“What we get is that the situation is evil,” Campbell said. “In this situation it’s about ‘let’s get these monsters behind bars..they are going to spend the rest of their lives behind bars. That’s what we hear.” “I don’t think he’s ever risen, to my knowledge, to call acts by white police officers evil,” she said. “He called them evil...Absolutely it has to do with the officers being Black and it has to do with the fact of how we assign in society the same troubling actions, we assign them in different ways depending on who commits the action. It’s hard to watch.”
While the nation’s attention has turned for now to Memphis, the Rev. Frank E. Hairston-Allen, head of the Greater Harrisburg chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, notes that the problems exist closer to home.
