Mike Trout returned to the Angels’ lineup Tuesday after missing 38 games because of a broken bone in his left hand but couldn’t spark a win in their 4-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.. In an effort to return as fast as possible to the Angels, which at the time was still in playoff contention, he opted to have the fractured part of his hamate surgically removed in order to speed up the healing and recovery process.
He knew that in his return, as he played more, his biggest obstacle would continue to be pain tolerance. But Trout was expecting that any of the soreness he would continue to feel would be bearable enough that it would not affect his at-bats. The Angels also did imaging on his hand/wrist, general manager Perry Minasian said, before he went out to play in that one game against the Reds on Aug. 22, to give him peace of mind that, structurally, everything looked OK.
