Although the Angels have lost 18 of 20 games, visible displays of their frustration have been conspicuously absent. Nevin says the players are simply hiding their anger from public view.

SEATTLE — The way the Angels have handled their miserable month has told two different stories, depending on who is watching.

“They care,” interim manager Phil Nevin said on Thursday. “That’s all I can tell you. They care. Everybody’s got different personalities. I probably threw a helmet every time I made an out. It didn’t make me more intense or care more than the next guy. I think that’s what makes some of our players so good, is they’re pretty even-keeled.”

“In the big leagues, you’ve got nice tunnels down here and places to hide,” Nevin said. “There are probably things you guys don’t see. I would consider them positives. Believe me. There’s some frustration. I’ve seen it. It’s visible. I just think they do a good job. They respect the game. There are kids watching. They go underneath and handle things just the way they should.”
