There are now 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans. When dividing strictly on party lines, the decisive vote has been cast by the vice-president, Kamala Harris, on behalf of the Democrats, giving them control of the Senate since 2021.We deliver the local news you need in these turbulent times on weekdays at 3 p.m.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
It could easily happen; midterm elections almost always go badly for the president’s party. Biden’s approval has risen sharply since the spring but remains below 50 per cent. There are historical headwinds for the Democrats and momentum has apparently shifted slightly away from them this month. But what if something else happens? In this scenario — in the truest use of a misused word — John Fetterman wins in Pennsylvania. He takes the open seat now held by the Republicans, giving the Democrats 51 seats. But they still lose Georgia and Nevada, so the Republicans still win control.
Curiously, though, Utah also sent Mitt Romney to the Senate. He twice broke with his party in voting to convict the impeached Trump. While that made Romney independent, moderate and courageous, he’s not going to make a habit of voting with the Democrats.
