State biologists are asking Alaskans to take stock of their respective properties in light of bears’ imminent return from hibernation.

Stantorf said the weeks leading up to bear season are important for homeowners. The department asks residents to remove any bird feeders they may have on their properties. He also advises that people take the time to clean up any bird seeds and other debris that may be on the ground. Upon emerging from hibernation, Stantorf says bears are more hungry and are on the food search. Yet, their behavior tends to be the same as it would any time of year.
