ANCHORAGE , Alaska - As we transition out of April and into May, we are also quickly transitioning away from a record-breaking winter season.
Anchorage currently has the second-highest snowfall of any season on record, with a seasonal snowfall total of 132.6 inches. That is just 1.9 inches less than the snowiest season, which was seen during the winter of 2011-2012. The 2023-2024 snow season brought fewer snow days overall than many years in Anchorage, but what was unique this year was the number of days with heavy snow. There were 11 days this season with at least 5 inches of snow in a single day; the previous record was just 9 days, set in 2004.
The average last snowfall date for Anchorage is mid-April, although May receives an average of 0.3 inches of snow. There have only been two years on record when Anchorage picked up 2 inches or more in May. That happened in 2001 and 1963, so there is a chance.
