Both Anchorage Assembly incumbents and all but one candidate generally aligned with the current majority had wide leads in high-stakes races for the seven Assembly seats up for election this year, according to preliminary election night results.

In the West Anchorage race, Anna Brawley has 59% of the vote while opponent Brian Flynn has 36.6% of the vote. Incumbent Felix Rivera has 56% of the vote in the Midtown race, while challenger Travis Szanto has 44%. In South Anchorage, Zac Johnson has 53.8% of the vote, while Rachel Ries has 42.9% of the vote.

Thousands of ballots at Anchorage’s election center have not yet been counted, and more will arrive by mail over the next two weeks. Election officials had tallied ballots from 30,313 voters by Tuesday night, representing 12.9% of the city’s 235,546 registered voters. Tallies will continue to change in the coming days, possibly up until the April 20 Public Session of Canvass, the deadline for mailed ballots to arrive at the elections center.

With just two incumbents on the ballot, the Assembly’s membership could change by more than half by the election’s end.City elections are nonpartisan. However, the Assembly’s membership has held a center-to-left supermajority, giving it a strong veto override power and ability to hold a check on the conservative Bronson administration. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

I look forward to the day when anchgov candidates are correctly labeled. Those candidates are at best, center-right, now they are leading far right opponents. The candidates in my district, Martinez & Bronga, are not 'left'. Left of their opponents? Probably, but not 'left'.
