Analysis: Labor opposition to Green New Deal could be a big obstacle

Markey fired back on Twitter: “We will continue to work and partner w/ @AFLCIO, who is right to say that ‘doing nothing is not an option.’ But until Republicans say that climate change is real, caused by humans, and demands action now, the only people they are in agreement with are Big Oil and the Koch brothers.”“Co-chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Reps.

“Look, we need to address the environment. We need to do it quickly,” Trumka said, according to my colleagues. “But we need to do it in a way that doesn’t put these communities behind, and leave segments of the economy behind. So we’ll be working to make sure that we do two things: that by fixing one thing we don’t create a problem somewhere else.

. “Just because someone doesn’t agree with what I believe in, or I don’t agree with their take, doesn’t mean we don’t need to continue to have a conversation . . . I think it’s wise to have those.” Sen. John Cornyn , McConnell's No. 2, said he thinks the measure will get a vote the last week fo March, the Hill. Another Republican Senate leader, Sen. Roy Blunt , also said he thinks the vote is set for that week. “A spokesman for McConnell said he didn’t have an announcement on timing for the Senate’s vote but that the GOP leader has said it will take place during the upcoming work period,” the Hill reports.

Yes will I belong to the Labor movement and we need to expand our membership to include new industries. Going Green is not a bad thing, Labor should embrace the future and lead the way.

gnd: promises to reindustrialize the country w blue collar work nationwide guy who thought trump was prolabor: gee, i dunno

American businesses are great at innovation but sometimes they need to be pushed by the government to do their best work. Businesses against innovation should be shamed and beaten in the marketplace by innovators

Pass a bill making ALL green jobs applicants belong to unions. Case solved!

No, I think the fact that it an absurd proposal is the biggest obstacle.

In my limited experience with Labor, it seemed pretty archaic. But it's also a big group, so would have to think there are smart people with new and better thinking. I hope.

My environmental instincts fighting with my pro-union instincts like that Clark Kent vs Superman fight scene from Superman III

I'm not a believer in the GND but it's pretty amazing watching 70+ year olds in Congress who helped destroy the world and ecosystems tell their juniors to suddenly care now. Dont do as I do just as I say.

🤣

You do realize the 'green new deal' was meant to be a joke, right?

The green new deal is not an actually possibility. Anyone that believes it is....is uneducated.

Hey, it's all about starting with a seed and working to a reasonable compromise. That's how we make progress. Lift those voices and let's talk.

There are quite a few obstacles with this dumb deal

Green New Deal? More Bullshit!

New Labor Department rule would give 1.1 million workers overtime eligibilityDept. of Labor announces proposed rule that would make 1.1 million American workers newly eligible to receive overtime pay beginning in 2020. If this actually goes through and is enforced I'll be really really surprised. Thank you. Trump is delivering for the working class. Blue collar wages rising more than white collar! 3.4% Finally. Well above cost of living increase. Let's hope illegal immigration will not reverse that as it did in the past. Expands OT eligibility for regular employees from $455 to $670 per week.

New Overtime Rule Expected to Boost Pay EligibilityBusiness groups expect the Labor Department’s forthcoming overtime proposal to be more palatable than rules sought by the Obama administration, but worker advocates say it doesn’t go far enough. “Boosting pay eligibility” is the literal opposite of what Trump has done at the labor department; he unceremoniously reversed an Obama-era policy expanding eligibility for overtime pay. What’s next from the WSJ? “Trump expands union rights”? “Trump raises the estate tax”?

Labor Dept. extends overtime coverage to 1.1 millionThe Labor Dept. extends overtime coverage to 1.1 million, significantly fewer than the 4.2 million who would have become eligible under a rule blocked by a federal judge that the department issued under President Barack Obama So Obama tried to cover 4.4M workers. Trump, the workers president, cuts that to 1.1M. What's incredibly sad is why did a federal judge block something which had been issued under President Barack Obama for the specific purpose of taking care of those eligible to receive the key words being eligible to receive or 3.1 million Americans having been blocked by a judge The Labour Secrety? You mean the guy who hides and protects child sex traffickers? That guy?

Amazon lobbies to exempt employees from labor protectionsMany of Amazon's Seattle-area employees would be exempt from new labor protections in a bill passed by the state Senate after lobbyists for the tech giant pushed to change a key threshold in the rules. The protections would partially prohibit non-compete clauses — controversial agreements... so that they continue oppressing them unprotected by labor laws or is it because the key word is profits not the person behind the profits?! That is insane Amazon. Why would you want to do that? This sounds like what a company in a 3rd world country would do not a global brand like Amazon. So you want to oppress your employees. You’re just setting yourself up for eventually failure. 😢

Allegations of anti-Semitism rock Britain’s Labor PartyIt was once considered the British party that stood up to racism and inequality. But today, the Labor Party is at risk of splitting over an anti-Semitism crisis with which it seems unable to come to grips. Britain's Labour Party has never 'rocked', bro. Racism is a Meme This 'anti-Semitism crisis' is just a hoax manufactured by the British Jewish lobby to keep jeremycorbyn OUT of Downing Street.
