Analysis: The Democrats’ premature fantasies about packing the Supreme Court and nixing the filibuster

Democratic presidential hopeful Jay Inslee, the governor of Washington state, on Sunday in Austin. By Aaron Blake Aaron Blake Senior political reporter, writing for The Fix Email Bio Follow March 11 at 1:09 PM As 2020 Democrats charge forward with an increasingly ambitious policy agenda, a couple of bold ideas for implementing it are working their way into the conversation, too: packing the Supreme Court and eliminating the filibuster.

These ideas are born of a clear and understandable frustration with the glacial pace of legislation when Republicans wielded the filibuster during the Obama years. And as a primary strategy, they make sense. “We’re going to make sure we can actually get things passed and upheld by the Supreme Court,” is an attractive message.

It’s possible Democrats could pull it off in 2020. But the maps are simply more favorable to Republicans and should be for years to come, for a variety of reasons including population sorting and gerrymandering in the House. Fully 60 senators come from states that Donald Trump won in 2016, and the median House district went for Trump by more than three points — all in an election in which he lost the popular vote by more than two points.

It's not packing the court when you're trying to restore normalcy. The supreme Court has been overtaken by conservatives for years. Their rulings only benefit conservatives. They're not supposed to be political but they are. Fairness is what we're after.

Again way off base. The court has now been packed by Republicans. Six words Merrick Garland, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavenaugh. Garland should be on the court and Kavenaugh and Gorsuch no where near it.

Actually, that is EXACTLY the time to reveal such strategies. Got to plan for the future & worrying about how a hopelessly fascist GOP base might react is pointless. Those mouthfoamers already get outraged on a daily basis on invented and real information about Dem policies.

The GOP has already packed the court. That's why they stole Merrick Garland's seat (and yes, it was unconstitutional to deny a sitting president a nominee to the high court). What about Kennedy's departure and conflict of interests with the Trump family?

Yes, they're premature. The whole gang has premature and immature bubbly ideas

She Wasn't Supposed to Lose 🤣

So a couple of fringe candidates with no chance to win , entertain the ideas in your article, and suddenly they represent the WHOLE DEM party. Okay...I see its gonna' be 2016 again with you guys in the media this campaign. No clue at all.
