Analysis: Robert F. Smith’s Morehouse commencement speech embodied leadership in action

By Jena McGregor Jena McGregor Reporter covering leadership issues in the headlines Email Bio Follow May 20 at 4:14 PM For commencement speakers, a message of “changing the world” almost seems mandatory to include.

There is nothing wrong with any of these calls for good deeds, and these speakers have made their own impact on the world. But listening to such advice and actually putting it into action — as graduates of Morehouse College watched billionaire Robert F. Smith do Sunday when he said his family would eliminate their student loan debt — has the potential for profoundly different outcomes.

Graduation speeches are intended, of course, to provide inspiration that launches fresh minds into the world. Some of the best speeches have reminded graduates of the power of failure, encouraged them not to waste time “living someone else’s life,” or thoughtfully described how to pay attention to what matters and think about the people around us.

Wow an individual voluntarily chose to help others and did so without government coercion. I was told this never happens. Wealthy people are greedy and selfish, only “benevolent” government “spreading the wealth around” can save society from their hoarding.

Where every other country has college tuitions figured but here in the states we have to fawn over rich people in hopes they take us out of the state sponsored slavery program. Pathetic.

I’ll say; just like Gates and Buffet who elected to leave their massive wealth for the betterment of the 🌎. However, we don’t have to be wealthy to make a difference.

Bullshit. THIS SHOULD NOT BE NECESSARY!

And WaPo had the insight to figure this out? God, how intuitive.

EVERY 👏🏻 BILLIONAIRE 👏🏻 IS 👏🏻 A 👏🏻 POLICY 👏🏻 FAILURE 👏🏻 FULL STOP 👏🏻
