In Pew’s assessment, 38 percent of Americans are independents — but that only 7 percent are independents who don’t lean toward one party or the other. That’s been fairly constant over the past two decades. Notice, though that Republican-leaning independents are much less conservative than Republicans themselves, by a 21-point margin. The gap between Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents on identifying as liberal is only eight points. In both cases, the leaners are more moderate than the members of the parties to which they lean, Republican leaners by 17 points and Democratic leaners by eight points.
That space between Republican-leaning independents and Republicans likely overlaps with the gap between the two groups in views of President Trump. Pew’s data show a 15-point gap between the groups in approval of Trump. For both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, independents who leaned with the president’s party were substantially less enthusiastic about their presidencies than members of their own parties.
Hard to be an independent these days when both sides seem to be taking extremes views on key issues. It only takes one or more of those issues to make a voter no longer independent.
In my experience Independents were usually voters who did not want to identify with the largest voting block in that locale or state but didn't have the guts to change to the less popular of the two parties
RockyRidgesPal It’s almost like you are starting to realize we have a wide range and can easily swing from a D to an R based on the candidates.
Obvious, most people lean one way or the other, the question is if they lean enough to support one party or another without question, that’s what separates a true party loyalist from an independent
Lol
Exactly. It only takes a few minutes, and you know if they’re Republican or Democrat.
In other news, scientists have confirmed the presence of liquid water in Lake Superior.
Who the heck determines “the center” anyway
Most Independents voted Obama 2nd term and are looking for a vote next term.. Right now Trump is the 2nd term favorite !!
Analysis: most independents are just soft-shelled mud-dwelling crustaceans

Polls are bull shite, someone's leanings depend on where you put the bar. I'm absolutely positive that if the lackeys of Bezos promote this 'analysis' It's just hog swill propaganda disguised as science. That's all WaPo has to offer, propaganda.
You all led us to Trump. Stop this nonsense. Your protect him and Scare away the Dem Candidates. WTF?
And this surprises who?
The more vocal the farther parts of each party gets, the more youll hear 'Im an independent' because those far right/left people dont represent & do annoy them. I say Im a mod Dem with liberal leanings because there are some days ppl in my own party annoy the shit out of me 👀😂
duh
You have thoroughly disproven that independents are neutral, which absolutely no one thought in the first place. Well done, I guess.
Yeah. We know. 😒
