Analysis: Cable news has covered a dead senator more than living flood victims

Environmental restoration workers this week deployed a containment boom from a boat on Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, as a precaution against possible fuel leaks in the flooded area. By Philip Bump Philip Bump National correspondent focused largely on the numbers behind politics Email Bio Follow March 22 at 10:24 AM Several people have been killed in the flooding that has drowned significant parts of Nebraska and Iowa, with estimates of the cost of the damage already topping $1 billion.

There are real reasons that Trump’s ongoing feud with a dead man is important to the political moment, as The Washington Post reported on Friday, given how it overlaps with Trump’s effort to solidify his base ahead of the 2020 presidential election. But it’s hard to see it as inherently more newsworthy than the flooding in Nebraska.

Cable news networks, though, spent more time on Monday and Tuesday of this week talking about McCain than Nebraska flooding or climate change. In fact, they spent more time talking about George Conway’s feud with Trump than either Nebraska or climate change. Compare that to broadcast news networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and PBS. They, too, picked up McCain but, on average, spent more time talking about Nebraska and mostly ignored Conway.

flood victims must pay via PR company to air their predicament. The Midwest farmers are hard working, tend to rely on themselves to recover. Therefore, they have not generated PR screeaming on media. It may happen when sharks wake up.

.

Wow, and I only watch cable news and had no clue of how severe the floods are. So, yup, you're right. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Yep, if floods were in CA, NY or DC it would be different.

Maybe the Washington Post should find some more high school kids wearing red hats and smear them into the ground

So has your President.

That means Trump's strategy worked -- he managed to distract from flooding disaster caused by climate change that he refuses to recognizes by attacking a dead Senator. Trump does not want Americans to know how devastating are the flooding & that he does nothing for the victims.

pbump The Weather Channel, a cable news network, has covered the flooding before, during and after extensively.

They don't need anything from us...just ask their congressman, .SteveKingIA
