Why is Hollywood remaking Road House?

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Road House remake’s R rating is a glimmer of hope, but it doesn’t change the fact that this remake doesn’t need to exist at all. Released in 1989, Road House stars Patrick Swayze as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadside bar who comes up against a corrupt businessman as he attempts to protect a small town in Missouri.

The Road House remake has officially been rated R by the MPAA for “violence throughout, pervasive language, and some nudity.” This is a promising sign that the remake won’t soften the edges of the original and will retain the hard-hitting fight scenes that made it a classic. It might even recreate the iconic death blow from the original movie, in which Swayze reluctantly ripped the villain’s throat out of his neck.

Road House's Biggest Remake Problem Is That It Shouldn't Be Remade The biggest problem with the Road House remake isn’t how far it’ll push the violence; it’s the need to justify its own existence. Most remakes set out to update their source material for a modern audience, like 1983’s Scarface or 2021’s West Side Story, but Road House is very much a product of its time. Its campy tone, ostentatious soundtrack, and shameless glorification of violence are all staples of ‘80s action cinema.

And on top of that, there’s no point in making a Road House movie without Swayze. Gyllenhaal is a fine actor and will undoubtedly give a serviceable performance as the throat-ripping bouncer, but there’s no replacing Swayze. James Dalton is one of the roles that Swayze was born to play, and one of the defining roles of his career. Gyllenhaal’s performance as the same character will inevitably invite comparisons to Swayze’s iconic turn as Dalton, and it can’t possibly hope to live up to it.
