By a good margin, near-Earth object 2002 LT38 is the largest asteroid within the vicinity of our planet. It's never been as close to us as it will be Saturday.

This asteroid simulator lets you destroy San Antonio and any other place you like

Earthlings in New Mexico discovered the asteroid in 2002. Its estimated measurement is 840 feet long; the Titanic was 882 feet. That's nearly the length of three football fields. The asteroid is classified as a"near-Earth object" due to its orbit and is labeled"potentially hazardous." If an asteroid of 2002 LT38's size hit San Antonio, the resulting fireball would kill an estimated 992,000 people. The shockwave would kill 460,000 more, and the wind streak would kill an additional 446,000. San Antonio had an estimated 1.47 million people in 2022, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

This will be the asteroid's closest approach to Earth yet, although it will encroach closer upon our planet in 2030.
