Based on an extensive study with a sample size of 1, I’m going to go ahead and say it’s the latter. This is of course just the latest example of meme-powered capitalism coursing through pandemic-addled minds/economy. Dogecoin was a dumb joke from the mid-2000s until it briefly wound up with a market cap of $90 billion. NFTs of freely available digital art pieces sell for tens of millions, the stock of a deeply troubled video game retailer has remained inflated by something like a factor of 10, etc., etc.
