This image provided by Siemens shows a rendering of one of the new Amtrak trains to be built in the U.S. by Siemens Mobility. Amtrak announced plans, Wednesday, July 7, 2021, to spend $7.3 billion to replace 83 passenger trains, some of which are nearly a half-century old.

The trains will go to lines in New York, New England, California, the Northwest, Virginia and elsewhere. The railroad has an option to buy 130 additional trains from Siemens. In an interview, Flynn said the trains will be capable of traveling up to 125 mph , and they will be able to shift from electric mode to diesel without current delays due to switching engines. Trains often are limited to 90 mph by track conditions, he said.
