American Airlines, hobbled by declining traffic related to the coronavirus and new federal restrictions on trans-Atlantic flying, said late Thursday that it will take a broad series of steps to reduce flying, cut costs and protect employees impacted by the disease.

In the accelerated fleet reduction, American will ground its six remaining Boeing 767-300s in May and then will ground its remaining 34 Boeing 757s between May and post-summer 2021.

Regarding its 130,000 employees, American plans to offer two-week paid sick leaves for employees who have confirmed cases of coronavirus as well as for employees who must be quarantined. It is seeking agreements with its labor unions to implement the policies for their members. Also, it will offer voluntary leaves, suspend hiring for at least 60 days and it will defer new hire classes in all job categories.

“These are unprecedented times for our airline and our flight attendants,” Bassani said early Friday. “We realize we had better work together and get this done. Our concern is protecting our members: their pay, their schedules, their jobs.” “Things are happening quickly,” Bassani said. On Thursday evening, she said, she was on the phone discussing changes with flight attendant schedulers, and “as we were talking more cancellations were coming in from network planning.”

It is mind blowing that even huge companies such as these are being almost totaled by a pandemic. In this case, seems only Amazon and Apple will survive the current situation.

a good perspective is that there were more cases of H1N1 & it was more deadly. Also H1N1 was heat resistant & surgical instruments had to be double autoclave or put in land fill. ❤️ Businesses are suffering!
