New York Matthew Messer hauls solar panels on the roof of a home in Long Island, New York, hoisting them one by one in the 100-degree June heat. Messer is the owner of New York Solar Maintenance, but these days he's working right alongside his lead technician seven days a week as business booms.
"This is not the perfect way to be spending my time right now," Messer says of his days spent up on roofs."But it's what needs to happen." That's because Messer says he can't find anyone to hire. His small business has three open roles, ranging from entry level to lead technician — one example of an industry-wide problem as a labor shortage meets increased demand. Millions of jobs and a shortage of applicants.
We need skilled trades people!
My husband is a GC. It’s ALWAYS a challenge finding skilled tradespeople! We need stronger vocational training! We need our electricians plumbers carpenters etc.!
Gosh. If only there was something they could do to entice laborers back into a physically demanding and skilled profession.
Why isn't 'wages' in this headline?
This is money laundering. Homes that will go empty because capitalist swine feel entitled to every piece of money possible. We need a vacancy tax
sounds like there's a market rate for labor
So pay them more
Better pay and conditions maybe🤷🏾♂️
Maybe next time be loyal to your employees and not treat them as disposable, and they won't look for better opportunities. Of course this is America, where labor is expected to only consider the employer's needs, never their own.
Get some of those able bodied homeless off the street and back to work.
I’m a retired pipe welder and I remember when the Georgia department of labor told me I needed to change my career because construction was on the way out! It made me think of when in the 1800’s the head of the patient office suggested that everything had already been invented!
A lot of the tide pod generation could fill these positions.
If you pay them a living wage you might get some help
People don’t work because they get the unemployment check
I've done construction & for the amount they pay you vs the work you do ion see how more ppl ain't quit that shit yet!!!
Provide liveable wages and you wont have a problem
