Amazon Cancels Massive 'Lord of the Rings' Game

Amazon Game Studios originally planned the project with Athlon Games.

, Athlon's parent company Leyou was acquired by Tencent Holdings last year, which led to a contract dispute. Amazon then issued a statement saying it's"unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time" and added"we love theIP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers." An Amazon Game Studios representative did not reply to a request for comment.

The game was originally described as a World of Warcraft-style open world game where players would be able to explore J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth. Amazon Game Studios has reportedly struggled since its founding in 2014 to launch a successful game and has had several false starts, having axed other previously announced titles like
