All U.S. Adults Can Now Get a COVID-19 Booster Shot

experts had debated the need for boosters among younger, healthy populations, with some arguing that the initial doses provided sufficient immunity.

While COVID-19 vaccines remain incredibly protective, Anthony Fauci, MD, the nation's top infectious disease expert, noted that immunity does wane over time. He has urged authorization of boosters, saying the third dose shouldn't be considered “bonus” protection, but instead an important part of the primary vaccine regimen.

“A year from now, we're going to look back and say that the proper regimen likely should have been a three shot regimen,” Fauci said at an event earlier in the week, according to CBS News reporterStill, others have stressed the importance of continuing to focus on getting the unvaccinated their initial doses. Currently, 82% of U.S. adults have had one dose of a COVID vaccine, while 71% are considered fully vaccinated.
