Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The 2017 biopic All the Money in the World shone a light on one of the most infamous abduction cases in history, and what happened to John Paul Getty III is worth taking a look at. The movie focuses on J. Paul Getty, one of the richest men in America, and how the abduction of his grandson, John Paul Getty III, opened his family to scrutiny from the media.
Despite his family's wealth, John Paul Getty III did not have an easy start to his life. His parents divorced when he was eight, and he saw little of his father, Getty Jr afterward.
It was only after November 8, 1973, when a daily newspaper received Getty's severed ear and a lock of hair, with a threat to his life that negotiations to pay the ransom were reached. J. Paul Getty finally agreed to pay out just under $3 million to the kidnappers with his son paying back that amount with 4% interest.
In 1981, Getty suffered a debilitating stroke as a result of drinking a lethal cocktail of methadone, alcohol, and Valium; the stroke rendered him partially blind and quadriplegic. He never fully recovered from his stroke and spent the rest of his life under the care of his mother. John Paul Getty III passed away on February 5, 2011, at the age of 54 from health complications brought on by his stroke.
