Early indications point to a poor turnout in Algeria’s parliamentary elections as tension surrounds the voting with activists, opposition parties boycotting and a crackdown on weekly marches

Election officials count ballots after the closing of stations in the country's first legislative elections since the ouster of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, in Algiers, Algeria, June 12, 2021.

Pressure from Hirak marchers forced former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign in 2019 after two decades in office, a time marked by rampant political and financial corruption, unemployment and repression. Participants in the protest movement now want a transition period before elections. Some voting stations were vandalised, and scuffles between residents and police were reported in some towns in the region.
