Both McKinley and Mooney currently represent West Virginia districts, but the state’s redistricting process shrunk the Mountain State’s three-member delegation to two, losing one of its three House seats due to heavy population loss over the past decade. Trump criticized McKinley for voting in favor of the bipartisan infrastructure bill, as well as his support for the creation of a bipartisan commission to examine the events surrounding the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. The latter failed in the Senate, while the former was signed into law by President Joe Biden.
McKinley argued that his support of the infrastructure bill was prompted by the ways it would benefit West Virginia, which he argued has aging infrastructure and a need for reliable broadband internet. Mooney made Trump’s endorsement a centerpiece of his campaign. The former president voiced radio ads for Mooney in the state that called McKinley a RINO, or"Republican in Name Only."McKinley also received the support of Sen. Joe Manchin, the only Democrat in the state’s delegation and a centrist who has frustrated members of his party by opposing some of Biden’s agenda, such as Build Back Better, his social spending bill.
