The Supreme Court on Friday ruled to uphold a federal law prohibiting people under domestic violence restraining orders from owning firearms, with Alaska residents and state lawmakers voicing their opinions.

The Supreme Court’s 8-1 ruling in favor of the federal law was argued against as being a violation of the Second Amendment to “keep and bear arms.”

According to a survey by the Alaska Department of Public Safety, 57% of Alaska women had experienced domestic violence or sexual violence or both during their lifetime, which was a 14% increase from a 2015 survey.to help victims of domestic violence, said that while she still hopes to see continued conversations around domestic violence rights in Alaska, she does see the Supreme Court’s decision as a positive step.
