JUNEAU, Alaska -
Lt. Gen. David Nahom — commander of the Alaska Command, United States Northern Command — showed committee members a public photo depicting a combined Chinese and Russian service action group last summer in Alaska waters. He cautioned that U.S. security forces are anticipating more Chinese ships and aircraft joining Russian counterparts within Alaska waters and the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone.
Co-chair of the Jointed Armed Services Committee, and senator for the Fort Wainwright area in Fairbanks, Rep. Scott Kawasaki said that while growing global tensions are cause for concern, he was pleased by the advances in military technology and the vast Arctic training Alaska units have been implementing.
He fears the recent decision by Fairbanks North Star Borough School District to close the junior-senior high school on Eielson Air Force Base could deter airmen from transferring to Alaska.
