Up until Thursday, Seattle was Cleveland’s top destination unserved by nonstop service. Cleveland hasn’t had daily, year-round service to Seattle since 2014.

Among the inaugural passengers Thursday was Andrew Garcia, a native Clevelander who lives in Seattle and makes frequent trips home to Northeast Ohio. “I’m very excited for this flight,” he said. “I like nonstops.”

William Koehler, chief executive of TeamNEO, the region’s economic development organization, said the flight is expected to generate an estimated $111 million in economic impact annually. “I think it’s critically important that our companies and our residents have ready access to the Pacific Northwest,” he said. “And we need to invite them to come here to see what we can do.”

The Cleveland business community and JobsOhio offered the airline a minimum-revenue guarantee to entice the carrier to come to Hopkins. Alaska officials, however, have said bookings have been so strong that they don’t anticipate needing it, at least not this summer. Alaska, typically ranked among the country’s top airlines, is the ninth carrier to operate out of Hopkins. The carrier is headquartered in Seattle, where it offers connections to dozens of destinations across the United States, Canada and Asia.
