Former Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely appealed and asked for a new trial, arguing the state did not disclose an investigation into a state witness until after the witness was on the stand testifying.

, arguing the state did not disclose the investigation until after the witness, Trent Willis, was already on the stand testifying at the trial in downtown Athens.account by funneling the money through Willis’ Huntsville consulting firm, Red Brick Strategies. The jurors also found Blakely guilty of obtainingthat held money belonging to people incarcerated in the county jail he oversaw as sheriff.

Beckman, in the state’s brief responding to Blakely’s appeal, pointed out that other evidence — emails, invoices, and checks — corroborated Willis’ testimony. “Blakely received a fair trial, not least because his counsel showed a remarkable preparedness that belied their claim that they just learned Willis was under investigation,” the state’s brief says. “They confronted Willis with no less than ten different accusations that he lied, stole, and abused positions of trust, including numerous specific questions about the Attorney General’s investigation.

Blakely eventually gave the clerk 19 checks from his personal bank account to replace the funds, according to financial records shown to the jury. But the sheriff routinely asked her to hold the checks — sometimes for weeks — before taking them to the bank, according to testimony. But in his appeal, Blakely’s attorneys repeated an argument they had made to the jury that found him guilty.
