Did Tuesday usher in a youth wave in Alabama politics? Maybe not so much when considering the state’s governor, incumbent Gov. Kay Ivey, is 77 and could be re-elected to another four years.
Sorrell, who defeated Stan Cooke in the Auditor’s GOP primary, said he believes “it’s a great look for the Alabama Republican Party” to have younger candidates as nominees and having a good showing during elections. “I believe that voters choose the person they believe will be best for the job and I don’t think it is fair or accurate to try and make this election about any factor other than my experience and dedication to making our elections safe and secure which was the message I campaigned on for the last year,” he said.
Other youngsters in higher office include “Big” Jim Folsom, who was 38 when he was elected governor for the first time in 1946. Lister Hill embarked on a 31-year career in the U.S. Senate when he was elected at age 44 in 1938.was 28 years old at the time he won his party’s nomination for Attorney General
