Kay Ivey is reaffirming her call for lawmakers to take action and once again give the people a say. “Since my State of the State, I stated that the people ought to have the right to vote on this important issue, and I still believe that very strongly,” Ivey said Monday. The House was in favor of a lottery, sports betting and some casinos, while the Senate opposed sport betting and would not allow casinos.
“We’re a two-body process for a reason,” Blackshear said. “A lot of times it’s stop gaps for each other. That’s why it’s so hard to pass things.” Now, both chambers are forming a conference committee to negotiate. The committee will consist of three representatives and three senators.“I agree with Speaker Ledbetter when he said he hoped the House and Senate members could work together,” the governor said. For gambling to become legal, three-fifths of state lawmakers and a majority of Alabama voters would need to approve.
