The Akron Zoo moved most of its birds indoors starting in mid-March, said Joe Golgosky, the animal care manager for the zoo’s avian collection. The birds are being kept in indoor areas toward the back of enclosures or in the zoo’s animal hospital.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Akron Zoo and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo are among many across North America that have moved birds indoors to protect them from the highly-contagious avian flu.

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo said in a statement that “certain bird species have been brought indoors to prevent potential exposure.” The statement did not specify which birds have been moved indoors. The public can still view the zoo’s screech owls, barn owls and tragopans because they are kept in enclosures where they are already separated from the public and other birds, Akron Zoo marketing and public relations manager Elena Bell said. The zoo’s North American songbird aviary also remains open, Golgosky said.
