With Americans beginning to return to air travel this summer after more than a year away, a new selection of high-anxiety novels set on airplanes awaits them

.by Clare Mackintosh, on sale June 22, features a flight attendant for the fictional World Airlines who must choose between the life of her daughter on the ground and the fate of the jumbo jet on an inaugural 20-hour flight from London to Sydney. Inout July 6 from flight attendant and debut novelist T.J. Newman, a pilot is told to crash the airplane or his kidnapped wife and children will be murdered back home.

An airplane is a handy narrative device, a small society at cruising altitude. Flights allow characters anonymity, a chance for reinvention or disguise. The split screen dramas on the ground and in the air help keep the story moving. These latest books will be sold in some airport shops, publishers say.

Air travel tees up a lot of jokes, like when the crew in “Falling” is in mortal danger and a passenger comes by looking for snacks. “You finished your chicken a half-hour ago, your blood sugar is fine,” a flight attendant snaps before shutting the galley curtain in his face.
