Mr. Arbery was jogging on a residential street when the father and son, armed with guns, got into a truck and chased him through the neighborhood while yelling at him, cutting him off on his route and threatening him,. Mr. Bryan, who filmed the confrontation, joined in the chase and used his truck to cut off Mr. Arbery, the department said.
State prosecutors have asserted that Mr. Arbery was “chased, hunted down and ultimately executed.” Gregory McMichael initially told police that he and his son armed themselves and pursued Mr. Arbery because they believed he was connected to a string of alleged burglaries in the neighborhood. An attorney for Mr. Bryan has said he didn’t commit any crime by joining the pursuit.
The three men weren’t immediately charged in the aftermath of Mr. Arbery’s shooting, as the case made its way through three prosecutors. After a video of the February shooting spread online more than two months later, the state attorney general appointed a special prosecutor. All three men were arrested in May 2020.
Mr. Arbery’s killing was one of the shootings brought to the public forefront during the June 2020 protests and led the Georgia legislature to pass
