Ahead of NATO summit, Serbia buffeted between West and Russia

LONDON/BELGRADE - Since October, French President Emmanuel Macron has questioned the effectiveness of NATO, hit pause on EU enlargement and called for a new ‘strategic relationship’ with Russia.

That is likely to be of concern for NATO leaders, who gather in Britain next week to discuss the future of their military alliance, since the Balkans, much like the Baltics, can be seen as a bulkhead against Moscow’s influence. Macron has grown increasingly wary of EU expansion, arguing that the 28-country group needs to take stock of its near doubling in size over the past 15 years, assess the impact of Britain’s pending departure, and think hard about the criteria it applies to those seeking to join.

“They are local phenomena, but Russia knows how to operate in such an environment and is empowered by it.” That makes Serbia a critical link in the EU’s energy pipeline, similar to the role Ukraine played as gas transshipper to the EU before falling foul of Moscow.

Serbia is de facto a part of Russia. Unlike Ukraine and Baltic nations who always resisted Soviet invasion and sought Western allegience, Serbia has always been solidly partnered with Russia and always will be.

NATO’s alliance is not ruined, and loyal to democratic values.

Nah, Serbia is & will always remain firmly entrenched in the Russian 'pan-Slavic' camp. Just as Serbs will always cry about their mythical mistreatment at the hands of the West. 'Butt-hurt' is typical of the Serbian genome. I don't know & don't care which chromosome it's on.

NATO is a fascistic and US invading force that Serbia just has to deal with in the way thay had to deal with the; Romans, Byzantine's, Hun's, Otomans, Bulgarians, Austro Hungarians, Italian fascists and German Nazis! Nobody in his sound mind should doubt Serbia's determination!

Let Serbia make up their own mind. It's the only way. There's no point in letting Serbia join. Many hate Europe and NATO. This will take generations of cooldown and yes Putin must F off too, but those ties run much deeper. There are no real friendships in 3-way knife fights.
