At least 20 people were killed after Kenyan police cracked down on massive protests Tuesday, rights groups said.

Protesters gather during a nationwide strike to protest tax hikes and Finance Bill 2024 in downtown Nairobi on June 25. Kenyan President William Ruto announced Wednesday that he would not sign a controversial finance bill that would introduce new taxes, a surprise move a day after Kenyans stormed Parliament and escalated massive street protests, which were met by a deadly police crackdown. More than 20 people were killed and hundreds injured in the clashes, rights groups said.

He said he agreed on that “collective position” along with other government members — an announcement met by applause from his audience.
