Point guard Tyrese Hunter broke onto the scene as a freshman last season with Iowa State, but he transferred to Texas this season, saying Austin was a better palce to showcase his talents.AUSTIN — Tyrese Hunter intends no disrespect to Iowa State University and the city that adored him during a fertile freshman season with the surprisingly successful Cyclones.
“It was a tough decision,” Hunter said Thursday, about a month out from Texas’ Nov. 7 season opener against UTEP. “A lot of thought went into it with my family about my future and seeing what’s best for me. I feel like I needed more of that platform where I can showcase my skills. After a season spent defying those prognosticators, the Cyclones’ second-highest-ranked recruit of all time decided to become the nation’s most prominent free agent. Gonzaga, Kansas, Tennessee and any other program that thought it held even a nanoscopic chance of signing Hunter all began their pursuit as soon as his name appeared in the NCAA transfer portal.
Hunter has spent this preseason getting to know the five other newcomers and five returnees from last year’s NCAA tournament team. But one of the main draws, aside from working in a bigger market and playing more nationally televised games, was getting to work alongside sixth-year senior guard Marcus Carr.
Beard said Hunter has raised his vertical jump to 45½ inches this offseason. And he’s shown a willingness to work on his 3-point prowess, though the jury is still out on that aspect of Hunter’s game after he shot 27.4 percent on 135 attempts last season.
