Now, state legislators are working to prevent similar tragedies on PCH and across the state.
Sheriff’s deputies are on the scene of a crash late Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023, on the 21600 block of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu that killed four female students from Pepperdine University. The driver suspected of causing the crash was arrested, booked and later released. Henry Stern, D-Calabasas, and would make convictions for driving more than 26 MPH over the speed limit a two-point driver’s license violation on specific roadways, including PCH.
Both of the proposed bills have the support of the Malibu City Council, which has long called for increased safety measure along the beautiful, but deadly roadway. Malibu has recorded more traffic fatalities and serious injuries over the last five years than any other similarly sized city in California. In 2023 alone, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department issued 7,580 violations for speeding in Malibu.
